I take it for granted that no hearer of mine will misinterpret what I have to say as the language of cynicism. The law is the witness and external deposit of our moral life. Its history is the history of the moral development of the race. The practice of it, in spite of popular jests, tends to make good citizens and good men. When I emphasize the difference between law and morals I do so with reference to a single end, that of learning and understanding the law.

Executive Summary

The Go-Giver is an excellent, inspirational book that takes place at Clason-Hill Trust Corporation on the 7th floor.  At CHTC, they have a sales consultant named Joe who is eagerly trying to reach his quota.  It’s a shame but, the last two quarters, Joe has fallen short of achieving his quarterly goals.  Joe thinks that he might finally reach success in the third quarter.  Instead, he receives some bad news.  He soon realizes that his biggest client named Carl Kellerman, who Joe has nicknamed “the Big Kahuna” is leaving him for another sales consultant.  Carl’s only explanation to Joe is that this guy Neil Hanson has more “clout and leverage” to help better serve Karl with his account.  With only a week left in the third quarter, Joe is now in danger of falling short for a third time in a row and being fired.  Fearing for his job, Joe seeks whoever might have the clout and leverage that he so desperately needs in order to regain Karl’s account, The Big Kahuna.

 Joe remembered that Melanie Matthews, his co-worker, had talked about Pindar.  Pindar, a big shot in their business was known for landing huge clients.  Joe was able to get Pindar’s phone number from another co-worker named Gus, who’s worked with Pindar in the past.   When Joe called Pindar, Brenda, his secretary assumed that Joe was inquiring about Pindar’s “Big Secret”.  Joe soon found out that Pindar’s big secret was “giving”.  It was the reason he had become so successful.  He told Joe that in order to receive, you must give first.

     Throughout the week, Pindar introduced Joe to some of the most successful people one would ever hope to meet.  Each one of them taught Joe one of “The Five Laws of Stratospheric Success.”  Pindar told Joe that the only way this would all continue is if Joe found a way to apply each law to his life the day that he learned it.

These laws’s turned out to be gold for Joe.  He ended up being able to apply all of them to his life throughout this book.  By doing so, he was able to land an account that colleagues in that business could only dream about.  In the end, Joe was also able to help people he had come into contact with on his road to being a very successful sales consultant. 

The Ten Things Managers Need to Know fromThe Go-Giver

1.         Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.

2.          Your income is always going to be determined by how many people you can serve and how well you can serve them.      

3.            Your influence is determined by how often you place other people’s interests first. 

4.            As managers, the most valuable thing that you have to give to your team is yourself.  Be a team player.

5.            As managers, the key to giving criticism is staying open to receiving it.

6.            Never sacrifice your morals and always believe in what you know is right.  

7.            Value the experience you can get by walking in another man’s shoes for a day.

8.            Do not ask your fellow man or women to do something that you’re not willing to do yourself.

9.            Make sure that you give your employees goals that they are able to obtain.  This will help to create self confidence

10.            Leave problems at work when you go home and leave problems at home when you go to work.  Try to create and keep that perfect balance.

Full Summary of The Go-Giver

     The Go-Getter.   The Go-Giver takes place at the Clason-Hill Trust Corporation.  At CHTC, they have a sales consultant named Joe who is eagerly trying to reach his quota.  It’s a shame but, the last two quarters, Joe has fallen short of achieving his quarterly goals.  In this chapter, Joe thinks that he might finally reach success in the third quarter.  Instead, he receives some bad news.  He soon realizes that his biggest client named Carl Kellerman, who Joe has nicknamed “the Big Kahuna” is leaving him for another sales consultant.  Carl’s only explanation to Joe is that this guy Neil Hanson has more “clout and leverage” to help better serve Karl with his account.  With only a week left in the third quarter, Joe is now in danger of falling short for a third time in a row and possibly being fired.  Now; fearing for his job, Joe seeks whoever might have the clout and leverage that he so desperately needs in order to regain Karl’s account. 

     It soon dawned on Joe that Melanie Matthews, his co-worker had mentioned to him a guy named “Pindar. The Chairmen”.  Pindar is a well-known big shot in their business and is known for landing huge clients.  He possesses the clout and leverage that Joe might need.  Joe was able to get Pindar’s phone number from another co-worker named Gus, who’s worked with Pindar in the past.  When Joe called, to his surprise, it was very easy to set an appointment with Pindar through his secretary, named Brenda.  His secretary assumed that Joe was inquiring about Pindar’s “Big Secret”.  Joe starts having second thoughts about the fees this Pindar guy might charge for helping him out and revealing this secret.  Now it’s up to Joe whether or not he wants to keep that appointment.

     The Secret.   Joe had told his wife, Susan that he was meeting a potential client and showed up for his appointment with Pindar.  He pulled up to a huge stone mansion that stood four stories tall.  In the front was a nice circular driveway.  Pindar greeted Joe and walked him inside.  He gave Joe a tour of the Mansion.  They sat down on the back porch and shared a cup of Rachael’s famous coffee.  When Pendar finally revealed his secret, Joe was shocked.  Pindar told him that it was “giving” that was the reason why Pindar had become so successful.  He told Joe that in order to receive, you must give first.  You can’t do both at the same time.  You’re trying to pull in two opposite directions and that’s impossible.  

     Pindar explained to Joe that they were actually pulling in the opposite directions themselves.  He said that Rachael’s famous coffee they were drinking was too good not to share with the world.  Joe’s response was that they could make a killing if they reproduced it on the industrial scale.  He’s right, but that’s not what Pindar had wanted Joe to see. 

     Pindar sat Joe down and told him that he would eventually share his “Five Laws of Stratospheric Success”.  Before he did, he wanted Joe to agree to one condition.  That when he had learned the five laws that he would apply them that very same day to some situation in his life.  If he didn’t, Pindar did not want Joe to return to his house for future appointments.  This was to keep him from wasting Joe’s time.  Joe agreed and the two set up appointments times each day at lunch for the rest of the week.  Joe soon had to rush back to work.

     The Law of Value.  When Joe arrived, Pindar was waiting for him.  He jumped in Joe’s car and said, “Were going to see a friend of mine in the city today”.  His name is Ernesto.  He started with a hotdog stand and now owns a few restaurants throughout the city.   He also has hundreds of millions of dollars in real estate.  I’m going to have Ernesto share with you “The Law of Value”. Ernesto said that “Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.”   That’s the key to what made me successful.  I was giving people a better value for their money than my competition. 

     The Condition.  Joe left the restaurant and drove Pindar back home.  Then he rushed off to work.  When he got there, he started thinking of what Ernesto had told him about the law of value.  Joe thought how I could use it today in order to meet the condition.  Joe’s phone rang.  He picked it up and it was his client, “Jim Galloway”. Jim was calling up to let Joe know that he would no longer be getting that business.  The company that Jim represented needed to go with a company that was stronger overseas.  Joe was very disappointed, but took it as an opportunity to meet his condition and use the law of value.  Joe did the unthinkable.  He advised his client to go do business with a competitor named Ed Barnes.  Joe knew that Ed would be able to help Jim much better overseas than the company he represented.  He didn’t realize it until after he hung up the phone but Gus heard the whole conversation.  He peaked into Joe’s office afterwards and starting asking questions about it.  At that point, Joe was still questioning himself on what he had just done.  Whether or not it was the right thing to do.

     The Law of Compensation.  Joe walked into Learning Systems for Children Inc. and was greeted by a receptionist named Marge.  She escorted him to the kindergarten-boardroom where Nicole Martin, the CEO of LSC was waiting for him.  When Joe walked in, it was like nothing he had ever seen before.  There were finger paintings, crayons, and tubes of modeling clay.  It was very unusual, but that’s where the marketing team would get together and brainstorm some of their new ideas.  They  compared and tested some of old ideas with the new ones as well to see how best to educate the world’s children.  The company was reaching between twenty and twenty-five million children in 13 countries annually.  They were receiving over two-hundred million dollars in annual sales worldwide.  This was a prime example of the law of Compensation.  It states that “your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.”

     Serving Coffee.  Joe drove Pindar home and when he pulled up to the mansion, Rachael was outside waiting for him.  She handed him a pound of her freshly ground famous coffee.  Joe drove off and all he could only think about how he was going to apply the law of compensation today.  When he arrived to work, he took the coffee inside with him and fixed a pot of it.  While doing so, he realized how he was going to apply that law. When the coffee was finished, he started passing it out to all his co-workers.  Some of them knew Joe and some didn’t.  They all had one thing in common.  Everybody was equally surprised.  Joe was the topic of conversation for the day.  Melanie was the most surprised because Joe remembered exactly the way that she liked hers.   She couldn’t remember telling him either.  He left later on that day went home.   

     Rachael.   Joe came over to Pindars house the next day.  Today, Pindar was taking Joe to go see his financial advisor.  On the way there, Joe asked Pindar about Rachael.  How she had come into contact with him.  Pindar explained that he and his wife needed to replace their personal chef because he accepted a job at a five-star hotel.  When Pindar stopped in a local café, Rachael was the manager there.  She offered him a cup of her famous coffee.  He instantly fell in love with it and hired Rachael on the spot.

     The Law of Influence.  Today, Joe and Pindar were headed to the Liberty Life Insurance and Financial Services Company.  Sam Rosen had started out as a struggling insurance agent.  He was too busy trying to sell any insurance that he could instead of what his clients really needed.  They could see that and a lot of them wouldn’t buy because of it.  Eventually, Sam realized what was going on.  He changed what he was doing and became the most successful insurance agent at the company.  It was simply because of The Law of Influence.  It states that “Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first.”

You would have thought that after dealing with the coffee that this next one would be easy for Joe.

     Susan.  He walked into work and found out that the computers had lost the past three days of work.  He had a stack of papers on his desk that he had to work on in order to fix it.  It took him all day.  When he left, he still hadn’t applied the law he had learned.  He came home and his wife Susan also had a stressful day.  He sat there on the bed and listened to her complain for an hour before she finally fell asleep.  Joe did too.  When he woke up the next morning, he realized that he hadn’t applied the law he had learned yesterday.  He was tempted to cancel his appointment with Pindar and happened to see a note that Susan had left on the bed.  It said, “Thank you Joe for taking the time last night to listen to me”.  He realized that he had used the law of influence by putting her interest first last night.  Excited about not having to cancel his appointment with Pindar, he left for work.

     The Law of Authenticity.  When Joe met with Pindar that day, they went to an annual sales symposium.  He had wanted Joe to meet a lady named Debra Davenport.  Debra was scheduled to speak at the event.  A law that Debra had stuck by through her time of selling is the law of authenticity.  It states that “The most valuable thing you have to give people is yourself.”  That’s the key to authenticity.  There is only one you out there. 

     Gus.  When Joe had returned to the office, all he could think about was how he was going to thank Gus for connecting him with Pindar.  Then it dawned on him.  He finally figured it out.  He approached Gus about it and sure enough it was true.  Gus was the connector that Pindar had talked about.  Gus sat down and told Joe how it all happened.  He had met Pindar thirty-five years ago.  He introduced Pindar to Sam Rosen a few years later.  Gus took the two men to a neighborhood stand and bought them each hot dogs.  Ten years ago, Gus introduced Ernesto Iafrate and his wife to Debra Davenport.  Debra had sold Gus and his wife their house.  A few years later, Gus had some friends that were forming their own software company and he introduced them to Sam.  Sam, Pindar and Gus invested in Nicole Martins venture and profited off of that idea just like they did for Iafrate’s Café.  By this point, Joe thought it was safe enough to assume that he would be having lunch tomorrow with Gus and Pindar.  Gus decided not to tell him and only laughed instead.

     The Law of Receptivity.  Joe stopped by Pindar’s house for lunch.  When he arrived, Pindar was on the phone so he waited downstairs for a few minutes.  He couldn’t wait to meet Friday’s guest and find out the fifth and final law.  While waiting, he and Rachael had a chance to talk.  Rachael started telling Joe about all her connections that she had made o far.  She went on to say that she’s capable of getting coffee from venders all over the world.  When Pindar came out to meet Joe, he asked him about this past week.  They reflected on the different laws he had learned.  To Joe’s surprise, Pindar shared with him the fifth law.  It states that “The key to receptive giving is staying open to receiving.” This left Joe wondering who Friday’s guest was.  The even bigger surprise came when Joe found out that it was him.

     Full Circle.  Gus had offered to stay and lockup the office for Joe so he could go home early.  He was the only one that new the kind of week Joe had.  Joe insisted on staying though.  He was so depressed about his overall numbers for the third quarter stayed that he couldn’t bear to go home.  He knew his wife Susan would be there waiting to hear the news.  He was just thinking about the law of receptivity.  Then the phone rang.  To his surprise, it was Neil Hanson.  The same guy that had landed the Big Kahuna account that Joe had lost earlier that week.  Ed Barnes had referred Neil to Joe because Joe had originally referred Ed to Jim Galloway.  After that worked out so well, Ed figured that Joe would have somebody great in mind.  Sure enough, Joe did. 

Neil went on to tell Joe about his potential fortune that awaited him.  A huge company with three international hotel chains and one luxury cruise line were in need of an international coffee supplier.  They were looking for somebody that could produce and ship premium top-shelf coffee around the world.  Joe thought for a second and said I know just the person that can help.  Joe couldn’t wait to call Rachael and tell her about the great news.

     The Go-Giver.  The next day, Joe headed to the mansion instead so he could get some that famous coffee.  All Pindar could do is smile.  Rachael’s dream had finally come true.  She had her own international company called “Rachael’s Famous Coffee.” Rachael, along with Joe and Neil were running the company and needed someone to help them with their charity.  They brought in a girl named Claire for an interview.  Claire was very nervous as the receptionist walked her to the boardroom.  Joe was able to calm her nerves a bit before sitting down to interview.  Claire reminded Joe a lot of himself when he met Pinsar.  The two hit it off and he soon hired Claire.  She would be helping to establish community-based, self-reliant, business cooperatives.  They were launching “Rachael’s Famous Coffee Foundation.”  This was going to enable them to start helping children around the world.  For lunch that day, Joe invited Claire to Iafrate’s Café.  He told her that there was someone he wanted her to meet.

Personal Insights

Why I think:

The author is one of the most brilliant people around…or is full of $ %, because:  The authors that wrote this book were incredible.  They touched on a lot of current issues that I believe us in the business world face today. The Law of Value was one of them.  I think that your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.  This is definitely the case with these CEO’s making hundreds of millions of dollars per year. 

If I were the author of the book, I would have done these three things differently:

1.            I would have made some of the chapter in the book a little longer than two or three pages to give the reader more detail at certain parts in the book.

2.            I would have had quotes from successful people in the business world that read this book.  It seemed to be nothing more than other author’s supporting each other.

3.            I would have added pictures of certain places that they went to help the reader visualize where the characters were at certain times throughout the book.

Reading this book made me think differently about the topic in these ways:

1.            This book re-assured me that what I was doing was right.  I’ll go out my way to help people at work and sometimes I notice that they take advantage of me because of it.

2.            This book showed me to always perform your best work because you never know who’s watching.

3.            It showed me that the people in life that get what they want are the ones that show up to get it.

I’ll apply what I’ve learned in this book in my career by:

1.            I’m personally a sales consultant and the five laws made me re-think how dependable I should be for my customers.

2.            It showed me that If I don’t worry about how much money I’m making when I’m negotiating that the money will take care of itself.

3.            think that you shouldn’t limit yourself to just your workspace.  The world is your oyster.  Go out there and see just how you can change it.

Nobody wants to be necessarily in a position where you have to find a lawyer to any situation. When lawyers to participate, that's usually when the Things get ugly for some, if not all of the parties involved. If you are involved in a situation where you need the representation of a good criminal lawyer, helps to know what to look for the best criminal lawyers.

Here are some very important qualities you should look for before obtaining legal counsel:

Tenacity

A good trial lawyer never say die, that will be increasingly willing to do what is necessary to achieve victory. Long hours pouring over every little of information available - the study of the records, questioning witnesses and searching for new information that even the police have found are all things your lawyer should do for you. If your attorney is every eight hours of sleep a night, while representing that he is not doing enough to win the case and get paid.

Reputation

A good criminal lawyer will be known and recognized in the community, have heard his name and see his face, because are always determined to win and I want everyone in the community to know how hard they work. The reputation of a good criminal lawyer for success, surely precede them.

Experience

Practicing law is a very complicated and difficult occupation that requires thousands of hours of study and experience in the trenches' really perfect. You want a criminal lawyer who has dozens, or even better, hundreds of cases under his belt. In each case tried to a good lawyer to learn something not had up its sleeve before and you want the benefit of all these tricks found in the lawyer will be representing him. It's even better if the lawyer has a good deal of experience representing people in cases similar to yours - some would say that experience is the experience, but there are some inherent obstacles involved treating some cases and most your lawyer has experience dealing with the actual details he or she meets her case, the better prepared, or it will be.

High workload

If you call a lawyer to make an appointment and say you are available daily at any time, which is not a good sign. You want a lawyer who has to fight getting an appointment with him, because that means they are working. A lawyer normally comes too busy to be overly occupied by the winner of the cases, if a lawyer says he has unlimited availability then you probably have not done so well for themselves in the room. It's much better to be squeezed into a winner and give the best lawyer opportunity to get a high quality representation to choose your appointment time with a lawyer who has too much time on their hands and preparing for defeat.

Local Office

You want a lawyer who has a local office instead of someone from outside the jurisdiction. A local attorney often have solid relationships with many of the many judges and prosecutors who appear before him. If your case becomes one of many who pleaded out to avoid a trial, that the close relationships with the judges point and the indictment could come in very, very practical in your particular case.

Depending on your case, the choice of legal representation may well be a life altering decision. Do not pick blindly from the phone book, make all necessary and appropriate investigations to ensure that you are getting the best representation possible that you can pay for your particular case because this is the only way you really going to be able to feel confident going into the trial.

We won the immigration bill. Is this bad news in the long run?

It makes me wonder if it would be better if it did happen. If we a democratically elected president next year (very possible) does not seem that what we together will be more liberal than Bush's together? , No mistake, Bush is on cheap labor. But Democrats are to maintain their fan base and the ACLU happy and I think what's going to get worse. And then people can be so sick of hearing about it you will realize that a little fence is better than no fence. What do you think? Who is our best hope (D or R only) that will give us tougher laws or better yet, enforce the books that are not corporate greed or bleeding hearts lead them? Who will defend rights of legal immigration and border strong, no excuses?

Bad new, which is all we get. Makes you wonder whether to vote. Anything goes change? I yet to see. D or R does not matter country is going down. Immigration bill or not keep coming and nobody is doing anything about it. A Fencing should have been for years, but D & R, do not want this. Always trying to keep the peace, and our borders open and welcoming to all. Our laws are so liberal it's disgusting.
