Medical resources for a writer?

Hi, I'm writing a story (possibly novel length) that I need to find some good resources for physicians. What I mean by that is, information for things such as what would happen to someone if the injury occurred to insert here, or if you were serious, what doctors / physicians have to do to save them / it may be, etc etc, and things like how long someone can live if the injury insert here occurred, or what would be the long-term effects .... you get the picture I'm sure! I have no knowledge of these matters and I can not find any Decent information through Google, so I'm wondering if there are any websites or (cheap!) books out there that could help me? Thanks for any help!:)

Professional writers in their circumstances cultivate contacts and friends among the medical community. Perhaps your personal physician can be a valuable resource for you, or leads to medical students who might be willing to help. Is there a medical school in your area? If so, you could start your search there.
