For the first 10 years of her life, Lily Casey Smith, the narrator of this true-life novel by her granddaughter, Walls, lived in a dirt dugout in west Texas. Walls, whose mega selling memoir, The Glass Castle, recalled her own upbringing, writes in what she recalls as Lily's plainspoken voice, whose recital provides plenty of drama and suspense as she ricochets from one challenge to another...

The Glass Castle: A Memoir The Glass Castle: A Memoir

Jeannette Walls's father always called her "Mountain Goat" and there's perhaps no more apt nickname for a girl who navigated a sheer and towering cliff of childhood both daily and stoically. In The Glass Castle, Walls chronicles her upbringing at the hands of eccentric, nomadic parents--Rose Mary, her frustrated-artist mother, and Rex, her brilliant, alcoholic father...

On June 9, 1973 is a day that is marked in the history books and the minds of fans of horse racing's all-time. This was the day that the Secretariat ran in the Belmont Stakes, taking 9 of the Triple Crown in history and the first since the 25-year drought in winning the Triple Crown.

There were only four horses on the track that day to compete with the Secretariat. One of those horses Sham. The colt finished second to the Secretariat, in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. There were three other horses in the field that day, but had little chance of winning and there œshowâ € â € bets placed that day at Belmont. The bettors had established destination â € "first and second Sham Secretariat.

The crowd that day Belmont Park numbers 67,605 and all eyes were on â € € œBig Network Secretariat and Sham set the early pace and was fast. They opened ten o'clock bodies between them and the rest of the field, but in the 6 Mark Furlong, Sham was tired and actually finished the previous placement. He had fought hard to keep up with the Secretariat in the mile and a quarter Derby, the mile and three sixteenths Preakness Stakes and now the mile and a half Belmont. This was the longest stretch of the horses had seen, but the Secretariat was still running hard and fast.

In the stretch, the Secretariat had a length of 31 (1 1 / 6 Lead miles) during the rest of the field. This broke the Count Fleet € ™ s margin of victory record of 25 lengths. There were only run faster mile and a half of land in the story at 2:24 flat. He broke the record set more than two seconds. The estimated average speed for the Big Reda € ™ s full presentation was 37.5 mph.

No other horse has broken 2:25 for a mile and a half of land. It is estimated that if the Beyer speed figure was created at the time, the horse has won a 139. It would have been one of the highest ever assigned.

Another interesting fact that occurred that day was the 5617 winner of Pari-Mutuel Tickets for the General Secretariat were never redeemed. It is believed that punters decided to keep as souvenirs instead of cashing in

Whether or not a day like this never re-create depends on the horse racing trainers and jockeys of today, but itâ € ™ s always fun to remember when the Stakes Next Belmont is only a few weeks away.

Feeding time for the horses?

I bought a QH 2 ½ weeks ago, and I was out of school for the Christmas holidays, My school starts early (7 am), so we have to get up very early, and I do not get home until 3:00 pm. Is it okay if I feed my horse around of 7:00 or 7:30? Or is that early, has hay all day, and usually feed her around 5 or 6pm. Thanks for the help!

This is a schedule feed perfectly. Honestly it really does not matter what time you feed your horse as long as you do at the same time every day and at least 8 hours between the two shootings. You could feed the 2 pm and midnight, if you win, and would not hurt the horse.
