A fake book can be a source of many inspiring piano exercises. It contains a lot of melodies written in a concise format that includes only the melody and the names of the chords. Let's look at how you can use these melodies to become a better pianist!

First let's take a look how melodies are recorded in a fake book. Usually find the melody of a song on the notation sheet music along with suggestions on the chord notes. Thus economic notation that allows to fill a fake book with a lot of melodies.

The advantage of this form of notation of melodies is that you can have a fake book as a reference book with a lot of tunes at his disposal.

The downside is that you do not have a written agreement the song for piano. You have to find a way to play the song itself. In reality, this may be an advantage that will help you develop as a pianist lets interpret the results of the track as you feel is appropriate.

A little melody in a fake book can give many exercises different areas of your piano and help in its development as a musician. Here are some examples:

1. Learn to play chords, along with a melody. For example, playing chords with your left hand and melody with his right hand, the game takes the low with his left hand and combine melody and chord notes with your right hand, play various combinations of bass notes, the notes of chords and notes of the melody with both hands.

2. Learning to find the right chords to use when playing a melody. In a fake book chords easily find suggestions can be supplemented with more chords making the voicings and chord progressions more exciting.

3. Learning to improvise using the melody as a starting point. This is often called melodic improvisation. You can also use the chords or the setting ranges as a basis for improvisation. This is called improvisation and chord improvisation scale.

4. Learn to play songs on the piano fake book in different keys thus developing your ability to play by ear and understand the piano keyboard by transposing the songs they have learned.

Actually, you can use a song in a fake book as the basis for its development as a pianist, if your goal is being a good piano player in the field of improvised music piano.

Take an example of a fake book. You have a song of their choice in front of you with the melody, chord suggestions and nothing more. What can be done to use this song as a starting point for a piano practice session?

We assume that the song begins with the chord of C major and then the bar is located next to the F-major chord. Here are some suggestions on what practices learned from these two bars of music.

1. Work on chord voicings. Practice playing C-major triads with his left hand on the three investments. That means that you play the C major chord with three notes in question, C, E and G, in three combinations, ie, CEG, EGC or GCE. Do the same with the F-major chord. The practice also to move from C to F, in various combinations.

2. Work on playing the melody in different ways. Notes the individual right hand, playing right hand octaves, playing the melody with the left hand and in line with his right hand and more.

3. Work on adding more chords. For example, take the C-chord to F could pass Gm7 and C7, thereby creating the following the chord sequence, C, Gm7, C7, F. Much can be done to spice the song by adding more chords to the book false.

4. Add notes chords to use in your song. A C-major chord can easily be substituted with a Cmaj7 chord or Cmaj9 and you can find more interesting chords if you focus a chord at a time. Of course, you can work on playing these new chords in different combinations and also investment.

5. Use the song as a basis for improvisation. Learn a melody passage by heart. Play this passage over and over again with small changes in the melody thus practicing improvisation melodic. Or use the chords. The chord of C major suggests two major scales to use when improvising. You can use a C-major scale or a pentatonic scale C - higher, for example.

To summarize you can use a single song in a fake book as the basis for piano exercises in many areas of his development as a pianist and, while building a repertoire of popular tunes for their own benefit and enjoyment of others.
