Expert advice for new writers. Publishing companies have consolidated, there are fewer editors, and literary agents are more selective. The result is that it’s tougher than ever to get published. Now, a successful literary agent and author and a best-selling nonfiction author and literary consultant provide even more of the practical advice every writer needs to get published... |
There are 4 ways you can publish a book:
1. Trade Book Publishing
2. Self Publishing
3. Subsidy Publishing
4. Ebook Publishing
1. Business Book Publishing - This is the main way that the authors have been getting published and can be very difficult. Although there are thousands of publishing houses, today there are more writers than ever before.
A publisher is a business and like all companies that aim to create benefits in an efficient manner. Is unlikely that you will be able to make contact with a publisher unless it has a good literary agent.
Surveys show that only 1 of every 400 applicants are accepted by agents of representation literature. Most literary agents prefer to take on clients who have been previously published.
For published with a publishing house will have a combination of talent, time and luck. You can be a very talented writer and has a wonderful book, but if the publisher has just published a book that is similar to yours, you can not be accepted - or whether it is a "red-hot market," then you may be lucky.
For these reasons, is important to research and see what the trends and what people are buying. An excellent resource for this type of information is the section of Amazon Bestseller.
2. Self Publishing - Where the publication last trade was the only option, now can "self-publishing" his book. Publication yourself is when you take on all jobs that are needed to create, print and distribute the book.
Some of the services required are:
* Edition - This is very important for most types of books
* Test Pages - Preparation of the pages and the order of pages
* Work - will have two front and back covers in addition to interior work, which is any image or clip-art that appears in the text
* Printing - You need to convert your files are on hard / soft cover books. There are 3 print options: get a small quantity printed, get a large amount printed or use a print on demand service
* Distribution - How will you distribute the books? You can connect with retailers and distributors online yourself or use a professional service
The first step is to decide which tasks will be done and what work is going to hire someone else to do. Today day, thanks to the Internet, there is much free information available at each step of the publishing process.
3. Subsidy Publishing - This is when the author pays a printer to produce a book and then receives royalties from book sales. This is sometimes confused with self publishing. With the publication of the same author pays all expenditure and, in turn receives 100% of revenues.
Another name for this is "Vanity publishers", which can sometimes get a bad rap. Often claim that they can sell the book and then after paying all that the writer is left with no real distribution and stuck with a pile of books.
4. Ebook Publishing - This is a new approach that is gaining great popularity. It is very easy to take a digital file and convert it into electronic book and sell online. A good way is to have a personal website or blog and placement of stories and content to attract visitors and gain publicity.
Alternatively, you can request an ISBN and online companies like Amazon and Mobipocket will sell your ebook through its distribution network and earn royalties from each sale.
Thanks to the Internet has never been a better time for a published author. Some people think that because there is so much information online than traditional books become obsolete.
I think that while this may be true in some categories, mostly quite the opposite - all the freedom of information creates a hungry for more!
When the radio first arrived, the music industry was afraid that they are not sold as many albums and then began selling more than ever before. It's similar to how a grocery store offered free samples, if one is sure what they are most likely to buy.
Recommend spend a good amount of time researching to find out what the best way for you to publish your book. I recommend using the Internet to share with others and do grow its readership.

How do I become an author and publishing my first book?
I want to be an author writing stories for children. How do I to become an author and 1st publication of my book? Do I have to fork my own money to publish my book in a small amount? How to do it?
You do not have to use your own money. Vanity publishing will take you anywhere. Obviously, start with writing. See if you can find someone to do the illustrations (not sure where to go for that). Then check magazines like Writer's Digest to see if someone is taking submissions. I must warn you, my friend worked for years for his first children's book published. The delays were ridiculous. This is how rookies in receiving treatment.
