Can anyone help name this children's book?

Years ago, I remember my brother getting an audio book from the library that also ended the hearing. Some Details: The book focused on a child with disability who was really interested in cricket. Being unable to play himself, is used to play the game of cricket with small figures representing the players. The child has a best friend who plays these games, although I seem to recall that the two have a falling at some point. I remember there was some intimidation experienced by the child / s of the "school bully". The final book was sad, and I pretty sure it involved the child dies, (possibly even before the argument had been adequately addressed as the best friends right? sure about that ..). Other curious detail that stays with me is some of the figures of the child being stamped on and crushed! Can anyone help me work so this book is?! Any additional information people can remember would be greatly appreciated.
